Job Title:            Chief Engineer - Comms                   

Reporting to :     Chief Technology Officer

Purpose of the Role:

Provides senior technical leadership to the technical workforce of McLaren Applied. A recognised expert in the communications domain this role works closely with the CTO to mature the strategic technical vision of the company; and with the Engineering and Product Managers to the create and deliver communications products to the marketplace.

This role is accountable for the technical delivery of the company. This includes collaborating closely with the Engineering Director; other Chief Engineers; and the Product Management community to manage technical risks and opportunities. Moreover this role also aims to develop effective roadmaps that exploit McLaren's strengths and achieve its business goals.

This role is a key member of the Engineering Council. It ensures technical collaboration across products and portfolios and is responsible for identifying opportunities for commonality and reuse.

In addition to its technical objectives this role is also accountable for the processes followed by the technical community. Working closely with the Engineering Director and Product Managers it curates processes to maintain efficiency and governance.

Role Dimensions:

Some travel and out of hours working depending on the business commitments.

Principal Accountabilities:

Develops and delivers complex systems. Leads in solution architecting and ensures deliverables are on target to meet long-term business goals.

Accountable for the delivery of the technical vision to strategic business goals.

Accountable for the translation of technical vision into communications product roadmaps.

Accountable for the Strategic Telemetry, Control and Analytic Platform Architecture

Responsible for technical processes followed (especially design reviews).

Directs innovation into new technologies

Directs time ensuring optimal use of skills and experience in providing most value to the business.

Assesses new products, clients and markets, alongside Chief Engineers, representing the company externally in a thought leadership capacity.

Mentors next generation of Chief Engineers

Finds and utilises the right technologies, manages significant risk. Takes responsibility for technical/architectural decisions and processes.

Defines technology based critical success factors, provides high-level direction and significant input to proposals.

Leads disruptive change to a positive outcome, using sound engineering principles; thinks outside of the box.


First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Computer Science, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).

Chartership with relevant professional body (IET, IMechE etc).

Enterprise Architecture qualifications (eg TOGAF v9) highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: 

A proven background in complex technology delivery for enterprise clients.

A proven background in enterprise architecture.

A proven background in technical roadmap management.

A proven background in fixed and wireless communications.

A proven team leader for multi-discipline teams.

A proven background in process identification, evaluation and management

A strong background in requirements capture and management processes.

A strong background in testing & validation of distributed electronic and software systems.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge. Able to quickly build rapport with clients, peers and stakeholders. Able to tactfully challenge without alienating.
